New flower production unit opens

Doha, Qatar, 20 March 2012

Roza Hassad, Qatar’s new horticulture venture, was officially inaugurated by His Highness the Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani yesterday at the company’s production facilities in Shahaniya, on the outskirts of Doha.

Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser and a number of dignitaries, businessmen and entrepreneurs were present on the occasion.

Prior to cutting the ribbon, His Highness the Emir was given a tour of the flower art gallery. Roza Hassad executive director Saba al-Fadala gave a presentation on the facility.

His Highness the Emir also presented an internationally-registered flower, aptly cultivated to be in the colour of Qatar’s national flag, and officially named it ‘Moza.’

Roza Hassad’s state-of-the-art facility produces 17 types of flowers, and over a 100 varieties. On average, 20,000 flowers can be produced daily.

The facility is hydroponically-run to minimise waste, and keeping the environment in mind, only biological pesticides used.
In addition, a research lab will test new crops and varieties to be introduced into the market. Roza Hassad’s facility is the first of its kind in the entire Middle East, and one of the few globally.

Future plans include the possibility of opening Roza Hassad facilities in other countries, expanding the product selections, as well as opening branded retail stores in Qatar.
